not 2 take the micky or nothing Lone, but seeing as u love grammar, it is quite poor,

firstly, u spelled grammar as grammer

secondly, wot sort of rule do u mean that an would start with A,E,I,O,U,Y.
so for example you are saying it's An Yellow Taxi, instead of A Yellow Taxi?

and also the correct usage is An not A.

it's 'An Xbox'

and thats coming from a grammar school student :P

Lone

well maybe not an for y (its sometimes a vowl) and the only thing i like about grammer is the rules, not spelling. also i do know that an sounds better then a but its proper.

DayleJ
01-01-2004, 07:42 PM
A is not the proper usage though, its An.

I tend to say: "I have an xbox"

and that tends to be the general consensus of the group.

i e-mailed x-box.com about this and this is the answer i got back

Hello Lone,

Thank you for writing to Xbox..

It actually depends on how you will use it. It can be A xbox or An Xbox.

In case you have other Xbox concerns, feel free to write back. We take feedback on Xbox and our Customer Service very seriously and review customer comments daily.

We are working to make Xbox the best gaming system for you.

Sincerely,

Rap
Xbox Customer Care Team

Its really about prefrences.

AN sounds somehow mature?:P

*sigh* to help dayle out Labour and Labor are two types of English.

Labor is an American spelling of the Oxford English word Labour

Same as Color and Colour.

And yes there is a rule that states that an is used before a vowel but of course there are exceptions to everything..like.. I before E except after C... but Science breaks that rule as an exception.

Oddball
01-05-2004, 08:42 PM
my sister told me the reason. It is becuase X sounds so much like E, so u'd use An instead, becuase e is a vowel. U use AN when ever u have a vowel.

<~Darkshadow~>
01-05-2004, 08:56 PM
X sounds nothing like E........ur sister has officialy become mental.

Oddball
01-05-2004, 08:57 PM
EX
X sounds alike

My sister is not mental dude, shes a College Student.

Gou Shi
01-05-2004, 11:24 PM
eh-E
ex-X

i can sota see that but with the vowel thing would u say "an yak"?(lone said y was one too i believe)

DayleJ
01-05-2004, 11:29 PM
lets see....

an xylophone.....? nope doesn't work again...

serious some of these grammar rules r really bad and not much notice should b take to them,

especially for example 'I before E except after C.'
because there r so many just for exceptions:

wEIrd
reiCIEved
lEICester
sCIEnce......it goes on.

Gou Shi

...neighbor, weigh.....

PS dayle u put science and recieved in there lol they have I b4 E lol

DayleJ

height, weight

i put science and recieved, because of the 'C'

Then If you were being gramatically Correct you would actually say AN because the AN Prefix is use before a letter that takes the sound of the lower case letters. for example a, e, i, o, u. and the X in exbox takes the sound of the voul e. so therefore being gramatically correct you would say AN.

Thats Why the English language is So hard to learn ;)

In Australia we spell the English Way. It;s not Different in all countries it's just the americans that spell their words differentley.
.

Mom- Mum
color - colour
Center - Centre
etc.

In this case baout the X-box its not meaning that canadians have different grammar it just means they use incoreect grammar or 'slang' same as here. when we speak informally we always make grammar mistakes

As you said: it's not meaning that canadians have different
grammar.

This is not true....they use very bad grammar.....because they're gay.......no offense to any canadian members......I just have a kid at my school who is very annoying and I plan on beating the **** out of him by the end of this school year. And he just so happens to be Canadian.

Anyways......I can understand the confusion but I would have to say it's AN as Abbadon's theory proves....as well as DayleJ's. And yes the English language is very hard to learn.....but surprisingly us Americans born in America..........can pick it up easily......or at least it was for me......but anyways....I just say what sounds right to me and 'AN' sounds correct for me therefore I shall useth it.:P
