boy trouble...advice?

this boy has been my best friend for over eight years, and ever since i moved, i forgot about him (i think cuz of the stress). Well, he came to visit me when i turned twelve and then everything was going fine.
then i found out that he liked me...seriously.

now the problem is, when he returned back to his home which was way down south, he had mailed me, telling me how much he liked me. i didn't mail him back and i'm already feeling low down for not returning his feelings. one year has already gone by and i haven't even sent a hello letter to him. the first time i got that letter, i was afraid to mail him back or to even call him, and that just made me feel the lowest of the low. i'm also scared that his patience is gone and now he doesn't even think of us as friends anymore.

i really don't want that to happen. i don't want us to get together boyfriend/girlfriend like, but just best friends as always. i will call him, but i don't know what to say.
what can i do?

THe good way is that you actually right him bakc a letter. IF you like him than you say that you do. If you don't just say it but why you don't and say that hes a really great guy and he'll find someone that will be lucky to have him.

OR u can just not right back. He'll think your cold hearted and mean. You'll ruin a friendship you've had for 8 years. Whihc is a pretty big thing to lose. Even fi you write this letter and he gets angry he wont stop begin your friends. If you've already been through 8 years what will one little mistake make. And you should have been paying attention GUys are really easy to tell when they like someone.
