FFVII: Advent Children - Square’s new FFVII project

It’s been 6 years now since FFVII was released and made Final Fantasy famous worldwide. 9 million copies have been sold and by and large it is the favourite of FF fans everywhere. It has endured to this day, a feat not achieved by many games made 6 years ago. Last October, about a year ago, Square confirmed that they will be developing a direct sequel to FFX, FFX-2, which is coming out in stores in North America in a couple of months. As the first direct sequel to any of the FF games in the main series, this astounding news quickly led to heated discussion on whether or not FFVII would also get a sequel, something fans have clamoured for since this most popular of FF games first hit the shelves.

The rumours started spreading after FFVII’s producer, long time Square worker Kitase revealed in an interview that he personally would like to see a FFVII sequel and also that some of his co-workers, such names as Tetsua Nomura (the character designer of FFVII, FFVIII and FFX as well as FFX-2) were like minded. However, afterwards Kitase completely denied the possibility of any sort of FFVII remake or sequel by saying that it would be impossible as they wouldn’t be able to use the same engine for the game as they had in 1997 and so the whole project would just be too expensive.

Last April FFWA had an FFVII-2 April Fool’s joke that spread like wildfire through the internet, and even ended up on IGN’s "the biggest PS2 rumours" article. Until today the FFVII-2 rumour was still at large on the internet, even if it had no evidence to back it up other than Kitase saying that he’d be willing to work on a project like that before going into complete denial.

However, since this has been a topic of discussion among fans for a while, maybe Square has started to take note and suddenly found the inspiration for a new FFVII project. Or maybe they just wanted to keep us in suspense and have been planning this all along. Either way sources say that Square is coming up with a new FFVII project!

This title supposedly takes place 2 years after the events of FFVII, so at least we’re finally getting an answer to our long asked question, "Just what happened during the ending of FFVII?". Cloud and Sephiroth appear to be on it, but there is no information about who the other characters are going to be.



It is also unclear if this newely reported release is going to be a movie or a playable game. In the Japanese scans the word "DVD" is repeated a few times, so it's not actually clear whether this is going to be a playable title.

The characters aren’t going to be in that cute anime style anymore, instead they've gone through a transformation and now look more like actual people. In my persona opinion however, certain aspects such as Cloud's gravity defying hairstyle really doesn't work well with this new look.

FFVII-2 is only a movie. Sorry gang. All we get is about 60 minutes of great animation based on FFVII. Should be plently better than that other FF movie, tho.

Tech TV had an all day XPlay marathon today (Thanksgiving), and one of the episodes had the movie trailer for Advent Childern. It's in Jap, of course, but it looks awesome!!!!!!!!!!!! Sep and Cloud battling, Sep looking bad ass as usual, and the environments look tight. Should be a good DVD when it comes out.

Nobuo Uematsu, the noted composer for the Final Fantasy series, recently discussed his current musical projects in an interview with Dengeki Online. He revealed a few interesting pieces of news regarding upcoming Square Enix projects, namely Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Presently, Uematsu's busy schedule has him working on the Final Fantasy XII soundtrack, a joint project with Hitoshi Sakimoto. He is also the mastermind behind the soundtrack of Square Enix's upcoming movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. According to Uematsu, the soundtrack will include three different styles of music: rock, classical, and folk. He is also considering reusing some song material from Final Fantasy VII, specifically the overworld theme, Aeris's theme, and One Winged Angel. In addition, Uematsu is working on the music for an unannounced Square Enix game. He also mentioned that another Black Mages album will be released sometime this summer or fall.

After the hype surrounding the announcement of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children this winter, gamers naturally wondered if more was in the works. Of late, there have been online rumblings across the pond about the possibility of an action-based sequel to the title to be released on the PS2. When contacted about the possibility, however, Square Enix's European branch was quick to deny the story, telling Euro gaming site Computer and Video Games "[This] is the first we've heard of it", going on to ask whether or not there was confusion surrounding the movie title.

There has long been a desire for more games based upon the world of FFVII, so it is only natural that this sort of story would pop up in Europe as well as here, since the game achieved noteworthy success around the world. While it seems that nothing is in the offing at the moment, RPGamer will continue to watch this particular story in case anything comes of it.







With E3 coming up in May, Square Enix is beginning to reveal small pieces of information regarding its supposedly better-than-ever booth at this year's exhibition. One such piece was revealed by Tetsuya Nomura, Square Enix's perennial character designer, in an interview with PlayStation Magazine. He affirmed that the company's upcoming movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children will be on display at the 2004 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children will be released directly to DVD this summer in Japan, but a North American release date has not been cemented. RPGamer will provide thorough coverage of E3 this May.
