Help me! I've never used cheats before

I have been trying to enter the cheat codes for this game but can't get anything unlocked. On main menu I try to enter the buttons in sequence but nothing unlocks. Do I need to reset? How do I enter these sequences? I want to do more circuits. Thanks ,I am a newbie.
