Is it just me or is GMan the most interesting person ever?
Im fascinated by VALVe's story line with regard to him.

For people who havent played fully through Half-Life 1, GMan was infact a scientist and yes he worked with Gordon Freeman at Black Mesa, the factory in the last game. We are told this through pics we saw in this game and the last, photos for example:

Like.. wtf is going on is a good question, GMan apparently controls time? thats crazy ****. But he does. Also;

'I didnt see YOU get on'
Thats the first piece of non-GMan speech in the game you hear, and would imply that GMan controls time, space, the whole lot. Is he Neo? Is it teh Matrix? of course not moof.

We see GMan throughout the game looking at your progress. He says in his speech at the end that he has more offers, so people are buying you?
Who is controlling you?

At the end of the last game GMan faced you with a portal to work with him or a portal to Xen, which meant death because Xen was covered with out of control creatures. In HL2 we are told that Xen is under control. How?? By who??

Post your comments, im interested in peoples views on GMan.

Ohhh man, I love this story line. I'll try to find a website that attempts to explain and speculate on it. I personally think he is from another alien resistance that was attacked by the Combine, and are trying to find a way to destroy them. I think he is one of the few alive and is trying to use Gordan (and now Alyx) to destroy the Combine...hmm...

btw Alyx is hawt.

But he has to be like God.. Or have you hooked up to something like in the Matrix. The ****er is controlling you dammit.

Dont get me started on Alyx.. mmm..

Hahaha, true. I cant wait for the explanation they give in HL3 as to G-Man the origins of the Combine, etc.

edit: rofl, you realise were the only two people who talk on these forums :P

The fact that he controls time would explain a hell of a lot of stuff...Havn't played HL2 but it would explain how he could get from one place to the other so quickly, and also how he kept teleporting you to different parts of Xen at the end of the first HL...I thought the G stood for Government Man or something. Because in the first Half-Life's expansion pack (Opposing Force), the GMan says he has some loose ends he needs to tie up at the end of the game. I figured that maybe he was a government agent sent in to destroy the Black Mesa complex...I don't know. So many questions, so little answers...Bah!

Thats what makes it great. Its ****ing hard to figure out aiight.

I dont think he is a Government-Man, ive seen many people say he is and he isnt, but i dont think he is. The only thing i can see is happening is he is either an alien lifeform assuming human form. [Breen speaks of host bodies at one stage.] or its like in the matrix - You are being hooked up and GMan is the boss. None make sense. Hehe..

Laguna Loire

Yeah, he could be an alien lifeform assuming a human role maybe...Although, if he were, he'd have to be another type of alien from those you face in HL1 and 2. Also, they'd have to be an amazingly advanced species...It might help if Gordon actually said something in HL1 and 2. If he replied to the GMan at the end of HL1, that'd probably give us a hint if they worked together...

In HL2 Breen was talking to the huge fat aliens on a Screen and they said he would have to get a host body to leave. Probably to a different plant, and its possible that GMan is an alien in a host body.

Its hard to say anything definite about GMan, like.. he appears to be God in HL2. He controls time.

At the start, when the other man on the train says; 'I didnt see you get on', its because you didnt, GMan transported you there..

its a very well woven deep storyline with many small details you overlook
they did an amazing job, one of the best storylines i've seen
I think the G-man IS of another species but in human form, maybe with far more advanced technology than us. he is using the human race and you...gordon freeman to purge the universe of the combine and their power hungry blitzkriegish sort

and what does it mean with his "higher benefactors"

it is something one could really ponder about
i love sounding philosophical

i love sounding philosophical

Lol...

I don't think we'll ever fully know who or what the G-Man is, as I doubt Valve are just going to give a full explanation in a game, or on the Net...But still, even we'll never know, I find it impossible that the G-Man actually is human. Unless he's got some secret hi-tech software made by the Government to basically give him the powers of a God, but that's very unlikely...

The only probable answer is that he is another lifeform, but i dont really liek the idea of that.

i always tried to shoot him in the first one wen i first saw him. god he's the most freaky, comfusing and mystery riden character in a game that i have seen

^ Heh, yeah I always tried shooting him, but he never dies or shoots back. He's like on screen for a maximum of about 3-4 seconds and then disappears...

Yeah, when I started reading about the G-Man I wondered where the hell people had got that name from...But then I was scrolling along the multiplayer characters you could control, and I came across the G-Man. His name was titled as 'GMan'...He is also called The G-Man on the HL2 website I believe...

TK 421

Well, according to some hardcore G-Man spotters I've read about and talked to, the G-Man pops up around 50 odd times on HL1...o_O I havn't seen him that many times. Seen him about 15-30 times maybe, if you include spotting him on the two expansion packs as well...

Hmm...I went in a game store today and started flicking through the official guide for HL2. I was looking in the characters list, and I came across the G-Man. The guide said he may or may not be representing a rogue Government, it is unknown. It also said that the G-Man contantly speeds and slows down his voice, as if he is not comfortable with human speech...Is the guide hinting that the G-Man is representing some kind of other alien Government? I wonder...

Sorry for double post peeps, but now that I've beaten HL2, here's my opinion on the G-Man:

The G-Man controls time, we know this for a fact. He's an omnipresent being and even stops time at the end of the game. I think Half-Life is all about fate, like Gordon was meant to survive Black Mesa, wipe out the Combine etc. The G-Man is kind of the overseer of this, just to keep track of Gordon and "guide" him to the right path. Proof? Well for one thing, the G-Man seems to know what's going to happen before it's even happened:

...if and when your time comes around again...I trust it will all make sence to you in the course of...well...I'm really not at liberty to say...

Also, if Half-Life was all about fate and destiny, free will would not exist;

Rather than offer you the illusion of free choice...

^ So there, the G-Man is telling you that you think you have free will, that you are in control of your life, when in actual fact, you are not. Also, another slight reference to Gordon's fate is near the start, where you enter that red cargo railcar, where you talk to a Vortigaunt the first time:

The Freeman is here! The reckoning of the Combine has come...

So if the Vortigaunts seem to also know what will happen, how do they know? Well, if you get to the red railcar quickly, and look straight at the TV the Vortigaunt is watching, (G-Man location #3) you will see the G-Man appear on it for a brief moment...After the Citizen has finished talking, the Vortigaunt has one final thing to say;

We serve the same mystery.

Surely this is a G-Man reference...? Have you wondered why the Vortigaunts, left stranded on Earth after the defeat of the Nihilanth, chose to help the humans instead of going against them? The G-Man has some kind of control over the Vortigaunts, he has told them what will happen, and for the benefit of themselves and possibly for Mankind, they have chosen to trust the G-Man and aid Gordon in accomplishing his fate...

So, basically, I think it's all about Gordon's fate, and the G-Man...well, he's basically an "employee" for Fate itself and basically sets Gordon on the right path...

thats one hell of an arguement and tbh i cant argue against it. ba5tard. :P

Gman is a god figure in HL2 and HL1 i s'pose than.

That is an excellent theorie, Liquid, i`ll have to agree 100% with that.

Also, i think you see the leader of Xen when after Dr. Breen takes the Manipulator and goes down the lift, once you go down Breen is talking to someone in the screen, it wasnt an ordinary Combine, so i`m guessing its the controller of Xen, he was saying that preperations were complete and he was ready to go, yadda yadda yadda.

Another twist to the storyline, hl3 or aftermath boss? ;)

TeH thanks guys! :)

*looks in official guide* (this thing comes in pretty handy :D)

Hey Anubis, Breen was talking to a Combine Advisor: "Behold the face of the Combine; a giant, green, sluglike entity with the gift of telekinesis appears for the briefest of moments on Breen's largest computer monitor. It blinks out of view a moment later." Breen was pretty much talking to a Combine leader, probably informing him of the situation and...stuff...

Would be cool to face him as a boss, probably use psychic powers to throw objects at you maybe...?

'The last free man' Gordon is referred to no?

well.. if the fate of the world is pre-determined like Liquids argument which i thought sounded like a bunch of easy answers and if it is something as simple as that they'd better do a hell of a good job of the gameplay when the next game is released.. or i'll be so pissed.

it sounds like a matrix rip off... the real world is a post apocolyptic wasteland, time travel occurs to change the fate of the world, stupid humans upset the balance, Xen, etc and Gordon's (insert special gift here) is all that can help stop the destruction of the world and bring the powers back together.

who knows we may see Gordon discover his (insert special gift here) with the new game.

i don't think we will have to wait long for a new Half Life, if the Source engine keeps getting the positive feedback and they can tweak it out (eg: their HDR lighting) and DAY of Defeat is well enough recieved i can see em making it

if not wait the for High Definition revolution

^^ Yeah, someone told me about that special gift thing once, that the G-Man or someone said that Gordon has a gift that lets him destroy a Combine army...where does the G-Man say that!? I seriously can't remember, I don't recall a scientist or the G-Man ever saying anything like that... o_O Though yeah, good point Forsaken, does sound pretty Matrix-style...
