Nope. You MUST have Steam to install HL2. Lol, there's no way around it, believe me, I've tried...:P You'd just have to leave your computer running all day if you're on dial-up.

Ahhh...cHilli, I already know the problem (I think), and I could fix it right now. Though, if I do that, my internet will be killed in the process...I don't know why, but it's happened before, and it'll happen again...:(

A spyware problem, according to Steam's support FAQ thing...

It certainly isn't my firewall, as I get the same error message even when I've completly shut it down. I already know there's a ton of crap on my computer, but it doesn't bother me because my firewall stops it from doing anything. My dad said it's embedded itself into a critical internet component or something, so if we get rid of the crap, we get rid of what we need as well...
Basically - I'm screwed. :(

Yeah, but that's just for Steam mate. When you've got HL2, it needs to decrypt all the files. Took about 15-20 mins for me, so it'd take a while on Dial-Up...Yeah, probably about an hour and a half like cHilli said...

Ive brought the game, it works and everything the game is very good fun. However i dissaprove of steam as it usually takes me 10 minutes to install a game and not a full two hours.

Can't really blame Valve though, not after their beta coding was illegally hacked, and released through Steam...
