If you get the 300D (the model down from the newest 350D) then you can upgrade by downloading a small piece of software, that allows the 300D to get all the features canon never added to it... Its also about 200 dollars cheaper, and its a little more flexible with lenses, you can get as good macro shots with a £200 macro lense, than the 350D with a £400 macro lense....You don't need to aim for a camera with high megapixel reosultion, its lenses that get the beautiful shots...
Another option is the Nikon D70, Its a little more expensive, but very much worth the price.. I know alot of pro's who use that camera and produce some excellent shots...
You need to bare in mind of course that your only buying the body of the camera... No lenses etc come with it (mabye a cheapo crappy one) A decent macro or Landscape lense will set you back around 300-400 Dollars (US)...
A good place to go to is the Photography chat rooms on Deviant, Thats where i learnt everything I know about photography with SLR's...
This is a good site for Camera Reviews (http://www.dpreview.com)

SLR is the only way to go if you're serious. Takes the best shots and it is closest to a real camera. I've always wanted one too. Not really good for taking pics with the friends though.
