Product Description
The PlayStation 3 console, described by Sony boss Ken Kutaragi as a "supercomputer for computer entertainment," will be available in 2006 and will combine state-of-the-art technology with next-gen digital media and high storage capacity.
As rumoured, the PS3 will utilise the new Blu-Ray disc format, which can hold up to six times as much data as the PS2's DVD discs--though it'll also be backwards-compatible with both PS2 and PSone games. It'll have slots for Sony Memory Stick Duo plus an SD slot, a compact flash memory slot, and a slot for a detachable 2.5GB hard disk drive.
The technical heart of the PS3 wil be its Cell processor, which will run at 3.2GHz-- giving the whole system 2 teraflops of overall performance. It'll have 256MB XDR main RAM at 3.2GHz, and 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700MHz. The nVidia graphics chip--the RSX--will, according to Sony, mean that "entirely new graphical expressions that have never been seen before will become possible. In games, not only will movement of characters and objects be far more refined and realistic, but landscapes and virtual worlds can also be rendered in real-time, thereby elevating the freedom of graphics expression to levels not experienced in the past. Gamers will literally be able to dive into the realistic world seen in large screen movies and experience the excitement in real-time."
The PS3's controllers are shaped like boomerangs and use Bluetooth wireless technology; up to seven can be connected at one time. The PSP can also communicate wirelessly with the PS3 for use as an exra screen or controller--more functionality will undoubtedly be released soon. The PS3 also includes six USB slots for other peripherals such as the wireless HD IP camera--the successor to the EyeToy.
Not many details have yet emerged of the PS3's online features, though Sony have said that it will have "always on" functionality and will continuously connect users to a network "fundamentally based on a on community, communication, commerce, and content"--similar to the Xbox 360's Marketplace functionality.
Also like the Xbox 360, the PS3 will be more than just a games console--features will include web access, video chat, and the capability to utilise digital photos, audio and video.
Games in development include Gran Turismo 5, Tekken 6, Metal Gear Solid 4, The Getaway 3, Devil May Cry 4 and Warhawk Redux.

Heh,i'll use it as a boomerang if I get 2. I'll throw it at all of my worst enemys... Anywho,it looks pretty good. I like the system itself, just not the controllers. I'm more used to the PS2 and PS1 controllers. They're easier to handle. I'll be getting rid of my PS2 for this thing.

The always online feature will indeed be in, you will be able to video chat with others while playing a single player game (or multi, doesnt matter)
Also, the PS3 is Dual Screen compatible, so if you have 2 big wopper TV's you can fully exploit the power and promise of PS3, by on one TV screen doing the actual gaming, and on the other TV viewing ur stats or other info that's important.
I heard you can add controllers through USB slots, not sure if that's actually true, but if that's true... the PS3 has 6 USB 2.0 Slots!

There is a lot to go through and I aint that sad to read it all so I'll break it down.
PS3 launches November 17th for Europe and the USA (YAY)
$499 for 20GB - £350 - 499 euros
$599 for 60GB - £410 - 599 euros
The ‘core’ PS3 will not feature memory stick slots, wi-fi operability for Internet connections and PSP communication, or HDMI output for digitally signed HD movie content.
PS3 controller motion sensitive, just like the Nintendo Wii (revo) no dual shock but the controller design now looks the same as the DS2 we all know and like with a few diffrences such as a mini USB port on the back to recharge the power pack as you play, yes thats right its wireless now :D
According to the latest specifications released by Sony, the PS3 now only comes with one Ethernet port and four USB ports. Also, the lack of a second HDMI port means that the dual-screen setup running 1080p function that was shown off last year is no longer a possibility.
The PlayStation 3 will come in two configurations, one will have a 20GB hard drive and the other will have a 60GB hard drive. However, losing 40GB isn't the only downgrade with the 20GB version. The 20GB version, priced at $499, will not have Memory Stick, SD, or Compact Flash inputs, Wi-Fi capabilities, or any HDMI output.
The new motion-sensitive controller, included standard in both the 20GB and 60GB models, will lack a feature that was present in the PlayStation 2's DualShock 2 controller--vibration. Citing the new "six-degree," a statement from Sony says "vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor."
The removal of vibration could also have something to do with the lawsuit won by Immersion Technologies, which sued Sony for copyright infringement based on the rumble feature in PlayStation controllers. Microsoft faced a similar suit, but settled out of court.
All in all this is gunna be one hell of a machine! Head over to GameSpot to read all the news if you can be bothered. Personaly I'd go for the 60gig package for the larger space and the those memory stick slots if they are in the shape of USB ports for use with Gran Turismo 5 me thinks. (photmode)

Hey I just found out from my mate Rob at GameStation that Sony wont be bring the cheaper 20Gig option to the UK at all! We have no option but to pay the currently suggested price of £425 for the 60 gig package. No problem for me, already got the money but I wanna wait to see if any glitches/bugs appear of the first batch.

Can I have smoething cleared up for me? Are PS1 and PS2 going to be fully compatable on the PS3? Also, will PS1 and PS2 memory cards be needed to save PS1 ans PS2 games?
Nitrous
05-14-2006, 05:20 PM
Good question that MORSN I never thought about it before. Anyway I got the answers.
1. Yes PS1 and PS2 games will work on the PS3....
2. Memory cards... doesn't look like it from the images of the PS3 I've seen.
mmm think I'll keep my PS2 when I buy a PS3.
Oh yes more news from Sony's big wig in the UK is that the 20gig package wont have any chrome lettering lettering (who cares?) and you wont be able to get any higher than the 20gig HD.... oh and it will have wired controllers.
hmm its a shame us lot in the UK wont see that package... (NOT)

so what does that mean, no HDTV compatibility?
also, I think that it's the second part as Sony were told they could continue using the technology.
I'm afraid I don't really understand the whole deal with what they're releasing in the UK.......

05-18-2006, 12:21 PM
Nitrous, you forgot to say another feature of the PS3.....the Ps3 will have the "Blue-Ray high-def Drivers in it, which is a deal because both versions of the PS3 have it and the original Blue-Ray DVD player would range in price of $1000. PS3 also have Hard Drives that will allow users to download games saves( Also Sony will be offering downloads of music, games & movies on the internet which you can download to the Ps3's Hard Drive)
There is also going to be a pre paid Sony PS Card that will allow you for online purchases. The conpany will offer online access for free features such as video chat, account manager, voice & text messaging, & friends list. The PS3 is also able to interact with the PSP so users can use both devices to play a game.
Plus, in the magazine where I got this from it has a Pic of 3 PS3's.....they are all in different colors; white, silver, & black. It may be for just decoration purposes or to just tell which PS3 is which (One has a HDMI connection & one doesn't.....but theres three of them so I think it is probely just for decoration purposes)

An update to Sony's PlayStation 3 website has revealed that you will be able to use older PlayStation memory cards with PlayStation 3 - providing you buy an adapter.
An entry in the official PS3 FAQ states: "To use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk."
"This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PlayStation 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card."
The FAQ offers no further details on the peripheral but at least it's a solution. 360 owners who want to play existing Xbox games on their next-gen consoles - providing they're even supported - either have to start from scratch or invest in a third-party peripheral to transfer save-games across.
The console itself is due to go on sale in Europe on November 17 2006.

So you mean I gotta buy a freakin' PS2/PS1 memory card adaptor just to copy data from my PS2 memory card to my PS3?! If that's the case, I'll just keep my PS2! (Unless I can get a price check on that adaptor...)
