My neighbour is around 13 or 14 and she was a nerd! She had round glasses and brown hair and girly blue and pink clothes. All of a sudden she started wearing black clothes, jewlerry, shoes, black eyeliner and she died her hair black. She wears no glasses now. I thought she was turning gothic.

Urgh, everyone expects me to wear spike bands and be covered in black clothing all the time because of the music I'm into...so because I'm into Death Metal I have to dress in black all the time and have long hair? Bull****...I can't be bothered, I just wear casual clothes with messy, normal black hair.

gothic people dont have to wear black anyway..
most cases ive heard of people turning gothic is that they want to fade away from the public sort of like a shadow, hence the dark clothing. some people just do it for attention though; they annoy me >:I

And some of course who join those weird Gothic Cults that have Black Masses. I really don't want to explain what that is, but it is quite humourous.
Thanks,

'Most goths become goths because they have been spurned by 'normal' society because the way they want to live their lives does not fit in with how most people are told to live theirs. Goths are free thinkers, people who do not accept the moral rules of society because they're told 'This is just how it is' or 'This is what God says!'. Rather goths tend to listen to what you have to say, and make up their own mind'
Meh i just ,like the clothes so i'm not one lol
Being a goth or an emo is a stereotype, a label.
Just because I wear black and chains doesn't make me a 'goth' or 'punk' or whatever it is people think. I prefer to not be labelled.
That goes for other people too. Because they wear different clothes or listen to heavy music or rap, doesn't mean they are labelled as something.
I'm not annoyed by any of the people that call themselves something, you can be as whino or rebellious as you want. Why? Because I'm flexible and like to be openminded to different people. I don't like to judge people.
Besides, some people don't match the label they give themselves.
Definitions for labels:
Goth (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=goth)

ive been told im gothique, which i dont really think so.. for one; i dont really believe in god and such, but i do believe in spirits and afterlife and them thingies.. and saying that i dont believe in a god isnt saying that i dont believe theres something there [o.o]
thus, i dont follow the 'christen' thing, as you say hatchet..
although, ive been given this label of being 'goth' at college because im usually more than happy to just be by my self every now and again.. and ive been told that im very 'distant' and the like, so people are aware of these actions i do and thus ive been told that i am gothique, as they say..
eh?

nice to care that you dont care about letting people believe their on things..
the girl deserves to die, painfully.. these people whom worship the devil might look like gothic people, but thats part of their beliefs to look and act like that (majority of the time) and this other people, so said 'gothics' sometimes tend to look simular, but that dont mean they are..
two totally different things, eh

Hah! Satanism or being a Goth is nothing to do with simply worshipping Satan...it's another way of life, do some research or something before you go around saying stuff about what Gods people following a certain faith worship...
People get the general impression that Satanists worship Satan because of the name of the faith, "Satanism", but it's not like that...I see people going around covered in black and saying they're a Satanist, pretending to chant to Satan and ****...they don't know a goddamn thing...

gothique..
anyway, cid.. i want to hear of this theory =D
Gothique? Hehe.
I doubt Cid'll have it. Goth isn't a way of life. Goth is a style. Gothic architexture refers to the style of the Middle Ages. Gothic literature deals with grotesque, often morbid situations (dragons too). Gothic art is much like the architexture, lots of arches and such, also has it's own time period but I can't remember which (probably Middle Ages as well, but I can't say for sure). When someone mentions goth music they're usually referring to Baroque (form of music popular during the waning of classical), or metal, people refer to that as gothic music too. Gothic fashion is (for the most part) black on white (dark clothes, pale skin).
In a sense, you could call it a life style because to "go" goth in all aspects of it, you would listen to the music, dress like they dress, read what they read, etc., but really it's a style, not a way of life. The only reasons for doing so is that the style appeals to you or you just want to fit in (is the goth craze still going on?).
*Edit* Oh yeah, and Gothic doesn't include a religion of any sort. However, if you want to get picky, during the Middle Ages and the time after (when the goth style was at it's peak), most people believed in Christianity, instead of worshiping the devil (to whoever said that).

Goth, Moshers... meh all look the same to me, people think I'm a mosher for the type of music.. for example... linkin Park, Nirvana, red hot chilli peppers and some Korn stuff. But I also like Rap music... Eminem, Dre, 50 Cent ect.
being Gothic or a mosher is just somone's personal style thats all it is and as for chavs/skally well they can burn in hell lol

gothic is a descendant of a naturereligion such as witchcraft and stuff, though because of the medieval look ( and in those times the catholic belief overruled)people started to label it as 'gothic' and said it to wear crosses. Though also, gothic is related to worshipping the devil which is a clearly shout 'HEATHEN!' so this relates back to the nature religion...( so worshipping devil is a very bold statement cuz comon, is believing in more gods the same as worshipping devils -_-' the whole idea of witches worshipping devils is crap btw....but I wont go lecture again >_>)
It's too bad that these...'neo-goths' dont even know what its all about anymore, they just dont get the point....think they're cool and stuff...
I respect the true goths, who knows that its all about, who know whats behind it and who know what they're doing,....too bad there aren't much of them now -_-'

I do believe you're confusing goth with Wiccan. (Maybe not, but with something other than goth)
Goth = style(nothing to do with a religion of any sort), Wicca = witchcraft like religion.

You have no idea how modern society works then.
Only thing you just did is state facts that most of us already know.
I was refering to the original question that was asked, so before you doubt me, please don't state my name in these posts to try and make a stronger point.
Goth has absolutely nothing to do with Dragons and/or arches, that's just random stuff.
USA, please be happy, in the US, Goth, isn't half as popular as it is here.
[stick-jây-tee]
10-31-2005, 01:56 AM
With that post, you proved my point.
Why do people go goth?
That was the original question. Sure I didn't answer the question. Why? Because the answer is simple; they like that style, want to fit in (since it's getting rather popular), or want to be unique (I think this reason's hilarious seeing that they're doing more conforming than being unique. . .). Maybe I did say that, it sounds familiar to me, but I don't really feel like scrolling down to see if I mentioned it.
Why did I put it how I did and at the same time call out your "reason" before you even put it? Everybody (and I'm sure your's would be a lot like everyone else's) treated it like a lifestyle itself, or a religion. Both of which are far from the truth.
Why do I say you proved my point?
Only thing you just did is state facts that most of us already know.
By calling them "facts," you have are saying that what I said is truth. That being said, everyone here, including you for that last post, is completely wrong. Thank you for that :).
Oh, and if you all knew these facts already, then why are they all treating it as a religion? Either they didn't know them (while indeed they should have), or they chose to ignore them. Either way, they needed to be informed/reminded.
I never said goth and dragons/arches were synonymous. I said that gothic style architecture often involves arches (I don't care who you are, you can't truthfully say that you don't agree with that 100%) and gothic style art and literature often involves dragons (look at the last parenthasis).
That USA comment you put trying to belittle me was quite effective. It really destroyed my credibility 100%, except for the fact that the popularity of "goths" in your region does not change what goth is. Nice try though.
You have no idea how modern society works then.
Oh how below the belt that was. You probably expected some commented like "ughhh no you!" Too bad, I'm not giving you that satisfaction. I could mention how my psychology and sociology professors very much disagree with you. When people who specialize in how people and society work tell me I've got quite a grip on it, I would trust them a bit more than some random kid on an internet forum. That would shoot down the one sentence in your post that I haven't already gotten too, so I think I'll not mention it. . . Oh wait, I already did.
I wasn't asking for some smart ass comment from my post. I was stating facts (as you put it).

Then finally I can hear your answer now in this small statement, and I can slightly agree on what you say here, but there are many more reasons ofcourse. In every culture it can be whole different thing.
Why do I say you proved my point?
By calling them "facts," you have are saying that what I said is truth. That being said, everyone here, including you for that last post, is completely wrong. Thank you for that :).

What you just said I've heard so many people say as well, let's call it the general facts, I've never said that your facts were false or lies, please don't twist my words.
I know most of these members get the general facts that you just stated, but that does not answer the question at all, acting like a know-it-all doesn't answer this. And by the sound of your reaction, you haven't found these things out yourself.
I never said goth and dragons/arches were synonymous. I said that gothic style architecture often involves arches (I don't care who you are, you can't truthfully say that you don't agree with that 100%) and gothic style art and literature often involves dragons (look at the last parenthasis).
This is like saying that Hiphoppers involves cars. (Ofcourse exagurated, keep ur pants on)
These are perfect examples of petty claims though. claims that are being spread this way so the next day someone will read this and say, well, a Goth is a person whole likes Dragons and Arches. Getting so sick of claims like that.
That USA comment you put trying to belittle me was quite effective. It really destroyed my credibility 100%, except for the fact that the popularity of "goths" in your region does not change what goth is. Nice try though.
By the gods man!? Are you paranoid? This wasn't aimed at you at all, I had no clue you were from the US, ofcourse it does not change what a goth is, for gods sake please read the first post and what the question exactly is.
Please don't try to sound smart by putting up petty claims like these.
Oh how below the belt that was. You probably expected some commented like "ughhh no you!" Too bad, I'm not giving you that satisfaction. Don't act so pathetic man, trying to make me look bad this way? below the belt? hah. If you think this is a blow to you, wake up and smell real life.
I don't know in what fantasy world you live in but ''I could mention how my psychology and sociology professors very much disagree with you'' has nothing to do with what you think, or what you just posted, no need to hide behind your professors for this one.
I wasn't asking for some smart ass comment from my post. I was stating facts (as you put it).
