MS execs seize on PS3 ‘07 slip fears
With Xbox 360 games and final hardware fully playable for the first time at last week’s X05 event, top Xbox execs openly questioned Sony’s ability to deliver PS3 in 2006 in Europe – with senior publishing sources sharing this fear. With Microsoft gearing up for a global roll-out of its next-gen system this Christmas, while Sony maintains a tentative ‘spring ‘06’ launch date for PS3, Xbox UK boss Neil Thompson predicted his firm could have a huge lead in Europe.
“I’ll be happy to compete whenever they turn up, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s not until spring ’07,” he told MCV. “If they hit Xmas ’06, then maybe it’ll be a very thin launch; a launch in name only.”
While Sony has never specified territories for its spring ’06 window, few expect it will attempt a similar global release strategy to Microsoft, with many in the European trade expecting a late ’06 PAL release at best, while others fear a longer delay.
Speaking at X05, a senior European publisher boss told MCV he “wouldn’t be remotely surprised” if PlayStation 3 didn’t arrive here until spring ’07 – and with a price tag as high as £499.
Elsewhere, Microsoft’s US execs took a further swipe at Sony for its failure to show-off any playable PS3 software. “We don't want to hide behind videos, we don't want to hide behind CGI movies, we don't want to hide behind false promises – everything we showed on stage was real,” said Xbox supremo J Allard. “Our medium is an interactive one. Showing isn't enough."
Sony, which has yet to reveal any concrete details on its PS3 online strategy ahead of the system’s proposed launch next spring, also drew criticism from chief Xbox officer Robbie Bach, who said: “I was stunned they didn’t announce anything at E3 or TGS. Whatever they do, they’re going to be chasing us for a long, long time.”
Xbox 360 launches in Europe on December 2nd.
Opinion - J Allard, Corporate VP, Microsoft
“There’s a big gap between what Sony claims and what they’ve shown. You might have thought our X05 presentation was a bit on long side, but they’ll need an eight-hour press conference pretty soon just to give people confidence in that spring ’06 date they’ve mentioned.
There’s a lot of stuff they just don’t have in place yet. They make nice movies, though. The differentiation in the next generation is going to come through the software and the services. If you put the best tools in the hands of the best developers you’re going to get the best games.
Then you look at the service, and we’ve got a big head start. It takes a lot of hard work to build an online service.”

That's bad news and good news at the same time, 2007.. Imagine how advanced the PS3 will be

£499!?
Hell, an advanced console yes, but the price tag is far too much! Damn! And I thought the XBox 360 was expensive! -_-

I doubt it will have a price tag of £499 tbh. If and only if the PS3 comes out in 2007 then the price of the Xbox 360 will have come down by almost half the price by that time, thus Sony may strugle to sell at that reported price tag unless the die hard sony lovers such as the Japs dont look at the price tag of course :P

Sony has to compete with Microsoft, They're not gonna sell their console that high while Xbox 360 is already lowered that much.

Sony chief divulges next-gen plans
Sony expects to launch PS3 in Japan next March, and in the US in the autumn, with a price tag of $300-$400 (around £170-£230).
Sony also plans to unveil a compact video device "to fill the time gap before PlayStation 3 launches in Japan in March and in the US a year from now," HollywoodReporter.com has revealed.
Howard Stringer, Sony's CEO, stated that "PS3 will be bundled with a selection of preloaded films, TV programmes and games, and will sell for between $300-$400" in an interview with the website.
While none of these launch details have been officially announced by Sony, it is becoming apparent that PS3 is central to the electronics giant's plans for its next wave of technology, as it will be compatible with the company's digital cameras, MP3 players and PSP.
Stringer described it as "a high-definition value chain that starts with cameras and goes through projectors and television sets and ends up with PS3".
hmm 2006 for the PS3? or 2007 who knows, one thing is for certain it's gunna be good!
oh somthin else I should menstion is the posiblity of the PS3 not being able to played USED (pre-owned) games!!! I smell a hoax for now, hope it stays that way an all

*starts whipping Japanese people* Get to work,Sony!!! I ain't waiting 'till 2007 for a PS3! I'll have done bought the 360!!!
I'm more of a Nintendo person but 500 ueros (However you spell it) that's like 600 us bucks. and if it comes out in 2007 then Microsofts new OS thing will be out so then the'll have more time to work on the xBox so then they might get the xBox Gold or whatever, knowing how well the xBox works, the xBox gold could be a xBox, and a comp. I don't think sony thought about this, but they do make everything that has to do with technolagy, though.

O.k, Microsoft is working on there operating system, they should be done with that soon so then they can put more work onto there xBox. that's pretty much all I meant.

Mac... have you been living under a rock... all gamers know that the Xbox360 is set for realease on the 2nd December 2005. There work is pratically done and I would think there are 2 sides to Microsoft organisation... the side that deals with the Xbox/Xbox360 and the side that deals with the PC software such as a new OS system.
Okay, when microsoft fineshes the new OS then theyll put more into there xBox so then they will make a better version of the xBox right after the PS3 comes out. So then both of them shall be the same price.

do u understand that it's all smoke and mirrors? this was the same bs as the PS2, promising us top of the line graphics and we got what? nothing.
now Sony is globally an electronics company, they make everything, cameras, Tv's, Stereos etc, right? therefore they're going to aim for compatibility with their vast array of products instead of focusing on they componentry itself.
whoever said OMG it will be so advanced, well not really, because say they plan a 2007 launch with the hardware they have now right, if they were to update they're global rollout with new hardware they would lose FU CK LOADS of dollars and the release time would be further postponed
now microsoft who have more dollars, better developers, nay, more INVOLVED developers, not forgetting the fact Microsoft make computer software and hardware only more or less.
you can argue that PS2 games have more playability and to an extent i'll agree with you, but this delay is going to piss game developers right off, as while they wait to see if Sony really has their sh it together, they lose time and money.
dont be suprised if u see Sony die in the ass in the console department now, i can see a possible scrapping of the PS3 project altogether

Good points Kris, I do agree that Microsoft has better developers, and Sony ofcourse is out for money, but you can't say that Microsoft is not out for money.
I love both consoles very much, and im glad they are dueling with each other to push each other to the limits, that's great! Imagine only 1 console ruler, then games won't be pushed to the limits and they won't try their damn best because they know their console is the best and everyone will buy it and the games on it anyway.
Sony's Playstation is still more popular and waited for then the Xbox.
I own both a PS2 and an Xbox, I have to say the Xbox looks way better and Dead or Alive itself is just a positive thing about that console.
PS2 has so many games you can choose from and ofcourse their sequel games like FF and MGS, I love the PS2 controller and im glad they didnt change it on the PS3, except that long thingie at the end but that isn't a bother at all.
PS3 IS going to have bloody impresive graphics, im sure of it, my friend who is currently living in Japan saw a demonstration of the developers of MGS4, and it looked bloody amazing, at first everyone thought that what they were watching weren't actual ingame graphics but just some movie trailer or something, but when the developers actually started toying with the surroundings ( adding fog, light etc.) everyone realized that it was THE REAL THING!
I seriously can't wait, MGS4 and Killzone look very promising and if the rumors are true and there is gonna be a FF VII remake on PS3 then I know who is the winner.

Good point.
Playstation has clearly won this generation (In sales) and the PS1 didn't have any competitors except the N64 whichwas clearly outclassed.
Playstation will have the advantage because of the amount of followers of the PS1/2.
People are scared to try new things. I couldn't care less if I got a 360 or a PS3 as long as I enjoyed it.
Anywho, the 360 is great. I played it yesterday.Great graphics and gameplay to match. I hope sony do well, the PS3 looks impressive so far...

btw Kris
Xbox 360 has 2 prices set, one without a harddisk, controller and silver membership
and one with a harddisk, wireless controller and gold membership, that costs 100 greenies more!
That's ridiculous, the normal Xbox had a built in harddisk, it's stupid that they don't add one in the Xbox 360 for the lower price, who said Sony wants to make money? look at Microsoft

From what I've been reading, it looks like the PS3 is a possible release in 2006. Of course, I dunno if it's true because of the word 'possible'. I'll go info hunting now.

I still say 07 for UK and other PAL countries with Japan getting the PS3 in chrimbo 06 so they can lord it over MS when all the Jap peep buy a Jap machine in chrimbo 06 with UK getting the PS3 in early/mid 07. Personaly I think if the 360 is at a lower price in the US and UK it will outsell the japs that buy a PS3 so MS should have another good chrimbo in 06 as well as this year ;)

The PS3 has not been released in europe yet and its the 8th of MARCH 2006!!
Im more of a Sony person myself and as some one said before me " Die hard sony fans" well im one of them. The PS3 wont be dissapointing. I also seriously doubt that the PS3 will be out in 2007 they wouldnt make somthing this high profile be posponed over a year in europe when its out in the US this year.

Seems to be a media black out on the PS3 by Sony, they need to take tips from MS on marketing me thinks. Anyway, got ma hands on a copy of the game industry mag and the latest news is:
SCEE president David Reeves last week reaffirmed Sony’s 2006 PS3 plans, claiming that word from the PlayStation daddy himself, Ken Kutaragi, is that production is “on track”.
he told MCV at last week’s DevStation, a developer-only event put together by SCEE.
“It is my job to match day and date with the US launch. I am doing my best to make that happen.” But lips remain tightly sealed on prices and exact timings. Reeves then went on to say "PS3 plans are constantly influenced by the demands of integrating new technology like Blu-Ray, while making sure both hardware and a decent array of software is available from day one.
There was more but I wasn't gunna type it all up....

What Sony shouldn't do is rush things, I don't care if PS3 comes out in 2007, if it's that bloody good as seen in the presentations and shows then I don't care how long I have to wait.
Better to wait a long time and have a kick ass powerful, flawless console then a crappy one with tons of bugs in it.

PS3 SPRING LAUNCH 'IMPOSSIBLE'
Namco president says he'd like to see a Christmas release
By George T. Chronis 3/13/2006
Sony Computer Entertainment still maintains that it will launch the PlayStation 3 this spring, even as the company's industry partners continue to openly disagree with the electronics giant.
"Without any announcements so far, the spring release is impossible,' Namco Bandai Holdings Inc. president Takeo Takasu told the Bloomberg news service on March 8. "We are developing titles for PlayStation 3, but the release of the games depends on the timing of the hardware. We would like Sony to release the PS3 this year for the Christmas season.'
Sources close to Compeq Manufacturing, one of SCE's component suppliers in Taiwan, told Taipei-based DigiTimes on March 6 that Compeq only recently secured an order from Sony and would not begin volume shipments of circuit boards for the PS3 until the end of June or early July.
In related news, in a financial conference call on March 7, Take-Two Interactive chief-executive Paul Eibeler confirmed that there would be no Grand Theft Auto sequel for next-generation systems prior to the start of the company's 2007 fiscal year this November.
Since 2001's Grand Theft Auto III, Take-Two has made each new installment in the franchise a PlayStation exclusive. When asked whether Take-Two would make its next-generation Grand Theft Auto a PS3 exclusive, Eibeler would not answer directly other than to say, "Our guys are very, very excited about the opportunity that next-gen hardware presents."
