View Full Version : Walmart Sucks

OK So now I'm calling for a boycott and/or protest of Walmart

Please look up a documentary called "walmart: The High Cost Of Low Price"
It should explain why I'm protesting Walmart. But I'll summerize things up for you.

first off, Walmart is such a big super power (NAZIS OF RETAIL) that they drive small businesses into the ground. They take years and generations of hard work and destroy them.

Walmart gets extra work for free from it's employees. to elaborate, let me first say that walmart's policy is "NO overtime pay whatsoever." But they make their employees stay overtime anyway. They basically say "Finish this job, or your fired."

If your a woman, there is no way your going to get very high up in walmart. They descriminate against women. and if your black, expect racist comments and such. I've heard one account of walmart employee's "lynching" a black man's bicycle (how he got to work) from the ceiling, and repeatedly calling him the N word, among other things. and managment did nothing when he filed a complaint.

When A Walmart comes to a city, the city will more than likely give them a hefty "subsidiary" i think its called. it's like a bribe to come and open up shop. When A walmart is in a town they have to pay the city a certain percentage of what they make. But after a short time, the walmart will change location, to just outside the city limit. So the city gets none of the benefits. they also have lost a good deal of money (sometimes upwards of $1 million), which could have been used to fund other, more important things. In one town, 3 schools closed down because walmart took all the taxpayers' money and the schools got very little if any.

Walmart Has a Healthcare plan. But unfortunately, most employees at walmart can't afford to have the $75 taken out of their paychecks to pay for it. Walmart actually encourages it's employees to sign up for welfare and medacaide. It even gives them lessons on how to fill out the paperwork.

Wlamart is too cheap and lazy to spend some money on crime prevention. In some places, up to 80% of crime happens in the local walmart parking lot. And at the few walmarts that have actually taken the time and money to hire a security guard in a golfcart fo patrol the parking lot, crime there has gone down to sometimes even 0%. and yet most walmarts will not hire these people.

I have more stuff, but just to make sure, I'm going to see if anybody has actually heard any of this stuff or agrees that this is wrong. as long as i dont get in trouble for this (im not entirely sure) ill share the information about walmart's affect on the environment, and the conditions of walmart factories and the situation of factory workers in Asia and South America.

Please don't ban me,
EL

o0, i've always wonder what goes behind walmart stores. however, the manager at our local wal-mart is black. and i have heard bout these crimes in the parking lot, they wonder cause there really big and have little camera coverage, i've only see camera's at the top of the building, and not a single one over at the other end of the parking lot. i mean, how many camera's do they have in a single wal-mart? i've seen ALOT, and they can't spend money on guards, thats a shame for them, but yet they have so many camera's, that must take alot of security to keep a eye on things. and yes i do agree bout a woman not getting very high up, i've only seen them work the cash register mostly. and doing little things.
nice find btw.......

I don't like what they do, but I enjoy shopping there. They always have what other stores don't. And it is the the most inexpensive place for me to buy my video games.

Walmart owns ASDA in the UK. Prices are good usualy for CD's and games ect but the quality of the food has gone way down hill so my mum don't shop there anymore unless we need somthin quick like milk ect ect.

As for the rest of it fel... no bothered one bit really and as for the crime... well thats america for ya :P :D

Apparently Walmart are selling of ASDA, they're not making the profits they wanted as Tesco is to big and powerful for them, os they are ditching them. However i think someone else is plannin' to take over ASDA, i forget the chain.

But yeah, i prefer Tesco, much better quality and Morrisons is great too, the seem to be experts in having what you need.

they claim Tesco is pulling little businesses to bits, maybe if 'little businesses' prices werent so high then we might actually use them.

Dude, this has nothing to do with Walmart, it's about the sorts of people actually being employed in the specific area that walmart is in, some have employees that are racists, and some don't, all depends on location, as in, the sort of people that work there.

I don't see what's bad about this? I'm a student and I need to pay $100 for my Health Care, and that they actually give lessons on how to fill out the paperwork is pretty decent.

Not saying I don't agree with your other points, I agree walmart is getting huge, and they are crushing all other stores out of their way.

Welcome to the real world.

My dad works at walmart. :o

But i disagree, you look at the negatives, not the positives. you come out like you're right, when not all is. Re-read your article, go over your facts.

Element Lord
03-30-2006, 10:00 PM
I did. these are hard facts come directly from this documentary i mentioned. as for the health care plan thing, 75 dollars for healthcare is alot when the employee makes only about 300 bucks a week. count that with taxes, bills, and such, and you have pretty much no money for food. And by getting their people to go on federal assistance, walmart is tying up thousands, even millions, of citizens' tax dollars, which could go toward keeping schools or such open and funded. so think about this, which is more important? the future of youth, or a multi-billion corporation getting a few extra dollars?

as to the racial descrimination thing, that wasnt so much to make the employees look bad, as to show the kind of people walmart hires as managers. the managers didnt do anything, and theyve been known to cook the books to cheat employees out of overtime pay.

yesterday i found out my saxophone teacher wored at walmart for a day. she left when she saw the training videos. tell you anything?

PS whats the ASDA?

It may seem like I'm turning a blind eye or whatnot...

But I kind of find this hard to believe. (Possibly because I don't hear many bad things about walmart, except "OMFGWTF, only poor people shop at walmart!!' [*loves walmart*])

I dunno...I'll look more into Wal*Mart: The High Cost Of Low Price

But I can't say I'd stop shopping there.

Even if Wal*Mart is bad, the people working there are obviously depending on customers. As bad as it may or may not be, a lot of people are going to be jobless if Wal*Mart disappears.

DayleJ
03-31-2006, 11:22 PM
A lot of people seem to dislike these big supermarkets because they take out smaller companies, but in my own opinion i don't care. more they take out the better. i would prefer 4 big chains compared to loads of small ones because as a consumer i would get my shopping a lot cheaper, because they can buy more stock at cheaper rates and so can sell it onto us for cheaper. also havin' just a few big chains increases competition between them, again this is great for the consumer, things are cheaper. i know its harsh and smaller firms can not compete has they can't afford to buy in the bulk these super chains do they should of taken on the market the same way as a company like Wal*Mart did.
Bigger = Cheaper, the only thing you don't want is ONE big store because then they could charge whatever they like, you need about 3-4 for example England has the big chains: Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons and Sainsburys.

Deadpool

Sounds like economics 101 there Dayle. Really good explanation. And that is very true, only big chain stores needed IMO here in America for usual items is: Wal-Mart, Kmart, and Sears.

Dayle. i just have one response to that "the fewer small stores the better" thing.

Imagine if oyu or maybe your father or mother owned one of those smal stores. your whole family had put years of hard work into that store. and then walmart comes along and you have to close down your life's work.

thats all i have to say

You live in the woods somewhere? I have wondered about that. I would like to myself in a nice log cabin.
Getting back to Wal-Mart, they may be a partly bad retail giant, but they do bring economic growth causing other stores to come, and as Dayle said, driving down prices for the consumer.

Wtf, Stop crying. Theres nothing wrong with Walmart. Who cares what they do? This is SO Biased towards ONE Walmart. NOT EVERY walmart has Racist workers, or Crime in the parking lot or schools getting shut down because of it. Sheesh, It sounds like someone who lives in a poor community is trying to blame Walmart for all the communitys faults.

I am in a labor studies class at the local college and the whole class is about walmart, our book is "Wal-Mart: The Face of Twenty-First-Century Capitalism" and after a few of the first chapters, is actually a good read.

but we mustnt forget that walmart is a business and businesses are out to make money.

Element Lord
04-15-2006, 01:30 AM
yes the idea of business is making money, but were not blaming walmart for making money were blaming them for how they make it. cutting corners with things like salaries, medical plans, getting overtime hours from employees and not paying them. getting money from a town to build there and then moving right outside the city limits so they dont have to pay the town any money, that sort of thing

Walmart bugs me because they always advertise that they have the lowest prices, but when you look at it, it's only a couple cents off what normal prices are.

btw, I heard on the radio the other day that in there Chicago store, they are building a green roof with plants and stuff the "help the environment", but I think it's just a place for people to go on breaks...

Wal-Mart does suck. I am all for laissez-faire markets, and therefore I believe that the power belongs in the hands of the consumer - I don't shop at Wal-Mart. Without shoppers, they fail. I happen to be from Ithaca, NY, originally - which, if you wikipedia Wal-Mart, you'll note was the town to boast the only bomb ever successfully placed in a Wal-Mart (no one was hurt). It wasn't me.

Actually, I (and my mom) think that Walmart is better than a normal supermarket. They are cheaper... But that's just the one in Virginia... I mean, okay, lemme give an example.

You wanna buy Kingdom Hearts 2. However, only 2 places have it in stock. They are Walmart and Game Stop. At Walmart, the game is 49.92, and at Game Stop, the game is 49.99. (Buying the guide is your choice on the matter.. However, Game Stop doesn't give a discount unless you buy a limited edition guide... Which I have...) Where would you go? Obviously, the answer is Walmart...

If I haven't proven my point with this... Then, I dunno what else to say..

at my game stop if u buy KH2 u get the game guide free and its only 40 dollars and at W mart its 55

Typical me situation:

Friend: Dude, ur gonna buy that CD here? the other shop has it for 10 bucks cheaper!
Me: How far is it?
Friend: Just a couple of blocks from here
Me: well you see, I stand here, I have enough money to buy this CD, so I don't really care about the 10 bucks (Ofcourse im also a loyal customer to that CD shop ;))

i found this on another website. it explains a great deal. read on if you have the time.

Wal-Mart accepts money from communities to help set up their super walmarts, when these communities need to use the money for other far more important matters such as repairing schools, or building new ones. Or Fire Houses. Wal-Mart kills small towns. And as soon as the other businesses are out of business, wal Mart then raises their prices.
wal-Mart also destroys too much land. For example, over 5 billion square acres of abandoned lots just sit, vacant, and ruining the view of countless small towns in america today. Vacant buildings that will most likely not be filled due to the fact that most stores do not carry enough merhcandise to fill these dumps.
In 2005, Wal-Mart associates paid over 5 million dollars out of their already pathetic paychecks to help support other Wal-Mart associates who simply cannot make it by on their paycheck. The WALTON FAMILY ONLY PAID A SAD AMOUNT OF $6,000 out of their Billions. THAT IS TRULY SAD!

TAXPAYERS paid over 5 Billion Dollars in 2005 to support Wal-Mart associates who have to be on WELFARE or WIC because this ****hole of a company is too cheap to pay the associates well themselves. Some managers have even been quoted in using the local government as their insurance policy (secretive) Go and apply for state aid. They tell their associates. Some managers (who surprisingly have any descency at all) have QUIT this ****hole because they have watched the associates suffer too much for too long. For example, One manager was quoted in saying that he would go out into his car and weep because his associates would just sit in the breakroom for their lunches simply because the company did not pay them enough to be able to buy food for lunch. This excuse for an American company is pathetic. PATHETIC

I viewed a documentary that interviewed women in China who work in the WAL MART SWEATSHOPS ( oh YES, wal Mart has SWEATSHOPS ) These poor women. I say poor because I feel so very sorry for them. Anyway, these poor women have to stay in a room with One half rotted ceiling fan, and several other women in the room. They are NOT ALLOWED to have more than ONE FAN. And they are sweating their asses off. Some of them falling asleep on top of the sewing machines of which they perform their work. Working day and night. And making a grand total of only 3 DOLLARS A DAY. Again WALMART IS PATHETIC.

What makes this worse is that wal Mart has a few of these sweat shops here in the U.S. Same horrible conditions. Same horrible nightmarish treatment. And same pay. Only this time it is to illigal immigrants who should not be in the country to begin with. Now I'm all for immigrants coming to the U.S. BUT TAKE THE LEGAL ROUTE

And what is really sad is the fact that if ****, oh I mean wal Mart would do this to american citizens if they thought that they could get away with it.

BOTTOM LINE.... I can't wait for the day when this Knight of Nightmares finally kills itself. It is well on the way.

Oh and before I forget, walMart built land in Florida where there used to be protected natural Wet Land with a grand ecosystem. Amongst this system was the Gopher Tortoise. Endemic to this natural area. ( meaning that it occurs nowhere else in the world ) and wal Mart came in and SOMEHOW SUCCESSFULLY MANAGED TO PUT UP A WALMART SUPER CENTER RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS ENDANGERED SPECIES HOME. KEEPERS FROM SEA WORLD AND ANIMAL KINGDOM AND OTHER LOCAL ZOOS WERE FORCED TO COME AND REMOVE THE GOPHER TORTOISE FROM ITS HOME TO MAKE WAY FOR ANOTHER ONE THESE PIECES OF TOTAL ****. COME ON. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN. LIKE THE WORLD NEEDS ANY MORE SUPERC'S. (supercell) (nova) Super Center.

Wal Mart is a total and complete disgrace to life in general. PERIOD.
