European gamers will be able to reserve their preferred nickname for use on PS3's online service as early as this Friday, when Sony's console launches in the US.

Aware that us poor Euro cousins won't be getting our hands on the system for some time, Sony will enable anyone, regardless of location, to sign up at PlayStation 3's official site and register a username for when we eventually play online.

Currently the link above points to a page explaining the first step of signing up, however the form isn't yet online. Japanese gamers have already been given access to PS3's online platform, but this move by Sony means that your precious tag won't be snaffled by an early-adopter stateside. You can register from 17 November so prepare your nickname and get ready.

I'll get mine in as soon as possible on friday morning even if I don't get a PS3 for a year or 2.

Will PS3 online be free? And will it be like the new slimline PS2 where you don't have to buy a network adaptor, you can just plug it straight in?

If so, I'm definitely getting my nickname on the 17th. :D

*runs off to dig out info* *ah found*

Sony is moving in a more cohesive direction in regard to its online service with the PS3. The new console has built-in networking capabilities, and Sony will launch a new online service to coincide with the system's release.

The PlayStation Network will be similar to Microsoft's Xbox Live service and will provide community features such as personal login accounts, friends lists, avatars, and matchmaking, as well as communication options including messaging and eventually voice and video chat.

The free PlayStation Network service will include community features and online multiplayer gameplay. Resistance: Fall of Man, for example, will feature a 40-man online multiplayer mode and a robust lobby system with buddy lists, as well as support for parties, clans, stats, and persistent experience levels.

Sony's service will offer an Xbox Marketplace-like PlayStation Store where players can go to download a variety of content including games, game demos, additional game content, and video files such as movie trailers and music videos.

John Smedley from Sony Online Entertainment demonstrated the working store at Gamers' Day 2006. Developers will have the option to integrate shops directly into games, letting players buy items from within the game experience. PS3 users can transfer cash to their "PlayStation 3 Wallet" by credit card or with prepaid cards. All items will be priced in dollars and cents rather than "points" as in other online systems. Sony has suggested that the commerce service can also handle subscriptions for massively mulitplayer online games or other games that may require constant upkeep.

What is the general process to create a PLAYSTATIONŽNetwork master account or sub account?

Answer

You will need to:

Set up a user account on your PLAYSTATIONŽ3 system unit for the new PLAYSTATIONŽNetwork master account or sub account if registration occurs on the PLAYSTATIONŽ3 system unit.

Create the PLAYSTATIONŽNetwork master account or sub account.

Associate the PLAYSTATIONŽNetwork master account or sub account with the user account. This last step may be done automatically if registration for a PLAYSTATIONŽNetwork master account or sub account occurs on the PLAYSTATIONŽ3 system unit. Please follow the instructions during registration process for specific information.

Only the damned Japs and Americans can do it for now! :(

My news for your information was correct... it was Sony letting me down :P

European gamers can now register their chosen user names for PlayStation 3's Network service, after Sony finally launched a Euro-focused registration website in the last 24 hours.

Sony had originally stated that UK gamers would be able to register at the same time as US early-adopters, at the console's American launch date, but it's taken until now for us poor, maligned cousins across the pond to be allowed access to PS3's exclusive club.
