After denying rumours of a price cut just last Friday, Sony has confirmed that the PS3 is going to be less burdensome in the wallet department. Well, in America at least.
The 60GB standard issue will now cost US punters $499, a whole $100 less than last week. Man you’ve got to be peeved if you’ve just picked one up.
An 80GB version, already doing the business over in South Korea, will hit shelves for $599, with a copy of Motorstorm shoved inside.
Alas, the folks at Sony have not been forthcoming about a price cut here. It’s now a massive £150 cheaper to get one in the US. Come on Sony, so many gadgets, not so much cash.

Yeah, I heard about the 60GB version being cheaper... Might just get one now. Although, I would like the 80GB version with the free game. =P

I'm waiting for the new European PS3 pricing details expected to be announced tomorrow.
I think if the price is dropped here it will be down from £425 to £400 which is not a big difference. But $100 is around £50 here so it could be £375... Now thats a little more like it.

Maybe I'll go over there and get one then. :P Sounds cheaper over there. But I'll probably wait longer until the price drops further...

You really don't understand the $ and £ currency do you... *sigh* nevermind. Anyway, all you need to know is that the PS3 is a hell of lot more expensive over here in Europe than it is in the US and Japan.
An update on the price cut in Europe:
Sony will not be cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 in Europe or releasing a 80GB model - instead it will be offering a Starter Pack containing the console, two games and an extra controller for GBP 425,
Due on sale in the UK on 18th July and in Europe on 1st August, the Starter Pack will offer two Sixaxis controllers and a choice of two first-party titles from a list of Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, Genji: Days of the Blade, Formula One Championship Edition and Ridge Racer 7.
Now thats not a bad deal I guess as I'd ask for Motostorm and Resistance but what am I going to do with the added controller? I have no brothers and I hate spllit screen playing. Guess I would have to speak with the manager at my local GAME store to see if I can have a HDMI or HD component cable thrown into the box instead of the added controller.

like nitrous said theres a currency difference, last time i checked $1 was £1.11, but i also heard the US dollar dropped in value over in europe.
and i dont think it will drop further, i would take advantage of the price drop and the package deal they give and it does have blue ray which is like 700USD, before it cost the same price but no package deal.
^as for the added controller i would take that instead of the HD cables since if your original controllers break and they cost like 50USD

Good point about the controllers Forte and that reminds me... Sony may be introducing the new rumble controllers next year.
Touchsense technology for new official pad:
The upcoming rumble-enabled edition of PS3's Sixaxis controller will feature a brand new feedback technology called 'touchsense'. It'll mean that the pad won't just rumble as per usual, instead Sixaxis will be able to output a variety of levels of feedback from several different points on the controller.
The new technology can create more powerful and more intense rumblings than any other pad. It will be possible for developers to create more subtle and appropriate feedback effects - the sharp kick of a bullet, say, or a slow increase in feedback while accelerating a race car.
Fortunately, touchsense isn't going to send the price of Sixaxis rocketing. It's unclear whether Sony plan to have two versions of the controller on sale - one with rumble, one without - but, according to the French Official PlayStation magazine who revealed the new tech, the cost of including feedback will only cause a slight raise in the retail price of the controller.

I agree with you RJ. Rumble should have never been tossed.

yeah I totally agree with you. Finally they realized that. Now Ps3 price is much better than before. Good job done by Sony.
