After much research, I have read both that the PS3 will be compatible with the "Watch Instantly" service that Netflix provides in the near future or that Sony has refused such an offer. For those who are not aware, Netflix is a movie rental service that is done by mail (I believe currently only in the USA). However, while you are online, your service contract allows you to watch as many movies as you desire that can be streamed online through the website. The X360 has already had this service incorporated through a software upgrade to those who are members of the Netflix service.
Even if the PS3 did not directly receive software through Sony's acceptance from Netflix (such fools, I say), there are developers out there that have created applications such as PlayOn that allow this and other websites such as Hulu (think YouTube HD for those who are not aware) to function properly while using your PS3 which allows you to view full-length movies and TV episodes directly on your TV from the web.
I was thinking another way around this was to install a Windows-based operating system into my PS3 and then access the website through Firefox. Currently, the streaming is done through a plug-in known as Silverlight and Windows Media Player which we all know is not present in the PS3's OS. Ultimately, the absence of WMP and the Silverlight plug-in are the only obstacle in utilizing this convenient service through my PS3 -- a true shame.
Has anyone else tried something similar? For those of you that have installed other operating systems into your PS3: do you have any recommendations to keep the installation process efficient and clean?
