View Full Version : Chaining?

I just thought I'd make a thread about this. Is there anyone else apart from me who thinks the chaining method in Pok'emon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum makes Shining Pok'emon a little bit too easy to obtain? The process itself is long and boring, but I think chaining makes things which used to have such mystique (I suppose) so easy to obtain. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this, lol?
Thanks,
HRBEK.

chaining? you mean through breeding, I havent heard of such a thing, although in all my 1000s of hours playing pokemon I have never run into anything shiney (everyone just acts as if you play for a couple of hours looking and you find it, but ive never even seen one appart from the red garrados in silver) If I had one heck yea it would have some mystique to it

Well using the chaining method I caught a Shining Smeargle, Gastrodon, Shellos (both variations of it), Ditto and Floatzel in a single day. Essentially what you do is use the Pok'eRadar to find the same Pok'emon as many times in a row as you can and with each time you find the same one, the odds of the next one being 'shiny' (so long as it's of the same species) increases. I honestly think it's way too easy and there is no mystique at all, except for those Pok'emon which cannot be found using the radar system.
I preferred the good old days when it required luck and patience to find them and I actually found quite a lot of them over time. I just think that they've made it a little too easy now to be honest. I could teach you the chaining method if you'd like me to, lol. If you talk to Dawn in Sandgem Town, she gives you hints about it in a way.
Thanks,

I dont know what the old method used to be other than spending hours trying to find it, and then catch it, but this does seem a little too easy. I guess this is just another cheap "Innovation" to a good game.

EASY? I've never been able to chain a shiny! I will literally sit there chaining them for days. The same pokemon, the same chain. But no shinies ever come to me...I guess it's just bad luck...

Shiny hunting is hard, even with the PokéRadar. It's probably the hardest thing I've ever done in my entire life. I can't get anything higher than 7 in Pearl. I did catch one shiny out of sheer luck without the PokéRadar on Pearl. It's a shiny Fearow. :) I luffles it. And then there's my shiny Absol I got from a friend for my Giratina, heh. Those are my only two though.

Oh, and did I mention my friend got a shiny Pachirisu after chaining seven of them? (I begged him to trade it to me, I was desperate, and lost my Pearl's Giratina, but I really lovs that shiny Pachirisu)
But only SEVEN!!!! I have really bad luck with chaining.

I guess the point is that it isnt easy, its just easier. And you do probably need some luck.

OH! i remember that chaining, it got annoying so i kind of forgot about it, but
even with chaining ive NEVER seen a shiney in the wild
and if I look at the game hours since silver...wow

I just caught a Shining Buizel then, lol. It's ridiculous how I can just say to myself that I will catch a certain Shining Pok'emon today and then in a couple of hours (or even minutes), I have caught it. I think it just makes encountering them a little too certain. I preferred the ones that appeared once in a blue moon, lol.

is there any trick to chaining or do you just need to keep doing it untill you run into something?

Generally with chaining you should find one by using the Pok'eRadar and then you'll notice that if you faint that Pok'emon, the grass will shake again. You have to faint or catch the Pok'emon you find for a chain to be formed. Then you should go for the shaking patches that shake in the same was as the one you entered originally and you should also be aiming to enter the patch which shakes the longest distance from you. I tend to go for the patches that shake about four steps away. If there are multiple patches that shake at that distance, I just reset the radar and continue (which does not end your chain unless no patches shake when you try again).
It's a lot to take in at first and so you might want to try YouTube because there are some handy tutorials there I believe. Once you get the hang of it, you'll definitely find a few Shining Pok'emon.

Its kind of annoying IMO
i'll get a chain of 14 and it'll just randomly get broken, more about luck than anything, i think i'll waste my time doing something else.

Well it's worth it if you have the patience, lol. To be honest though, I don't feel very rewarded when I find one. It's just as disappointing as it is exciting, haha.
