problem with guests

Greetings wise & noble gamers...

I am having a few problems with The Sims (Deluxe), & I am hoping someone can help me figure out how to correct them.

I am unable to greet my guests when they show up. AND they always show up in a dining room on the back of the house. It's making it impossible to have or keep friends.

PS I have been playing around with a few cheat codes so it's safe to assume it's something I screwed up...
