I recently bought the game Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. I've been waiting for months for it to be released, and.. yes. I'm QUITE pleased with it. At least, so far.
Before I begin talking about the game, I'll explain my reasoning behind buying this instead of Sould Calibur II, which was released on the same day. For one thing, its a Tactical RPG. There are so few of those that its kinda pathetic. ^^; Even fewer good ones(ie: Hoshigami *shudder*). This is definatly a good one. Another thing is that, from what I've heard, Atlus is only going to have one American printing of this game.. so, only a few thousand copies may be produced in the entire USA. Soul Calibur II, on the other hand, will be mass produced for years now. I'm sure you can see my point.
Okay, on to the review/rantage!
Title: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
Platform: PS2
Genre: Tactical RPG
Developer/Publisher: Nippon Ichi/Atlus USA
Story: The story takes place two years after the death of King Krichevskoy, the ruler of the Netherworld. His son Laharl awakens from a long sleep, unaware of his father's death. Meanwhile, scheming demons vie for supremacy over the Netherworld. With the help of his subordinate Etna and her underlings, the egocentric, self-absorbed Prince Laharl must fight to regain the throne and claim his birthright.
Review: When I first popped the game into my PS2, I was rather disappointed with the lack of an anime-type opening sequence. Instead, I was greeted with a sad sounding musicbox-type song. This feeling of dissapointment soon turned into a feeling of "OMG AWESOME" when I heard the American voice acting. XD Its wonderfully done, especially with Etna. However, Laharl's voice sounded a bit too stuck up for my tastes(although he IS the Prince of the Underworld). Normally, I would just suck it up and deal with it, but not this time. One of the coolest things about this game is, much like the .hack games, you have the option of playing the game with the English or original Japanese voice acting. Both have their good and bad points, but I prefer hearing Laharl's sarcastic Japanese voice over his stuck-up/whiny English voice. The music is typical of Nippon Ichi and is very.. well, silly is a good word, I guess. ^^; Its happy and upbeat.. at least in Laharl's Castle, which serves as your base of operations. In battle, the music is fast-paced and energetic and it does a good job of setting the mood of particular battles(I'm still waiting to hear Tsunami Bomb's song, though) Battle is played out in the typical tRPG style, isometric grid and all. If you've played Final Fantasy Tactics or Ogre Battle, you know what to expect. However, something that even FFT didn't incorperate is the idea of team attacks. When you line up two to four characters together and target an enemy, a small box appears, giving you the percentage of each of the units involved chances of participating in a team attack. Two and Three character team attacks aren't usually that impressive.. however, four character attacks are QUITE nice. A friend of mine described one said 4-unit attack as "holy god, they just gangbanged that poor guy!". Individual character attacks are nice too, and some key characters have their own special abilities, such as Etna's "Prinny Barrage" attack. The attacks are usually very impressive, visually-wise. Some attacks even transport enemies to different screens just so the attack has more room to be performed. There are litterally hundreds of attacks as well. But then, with 155 character classes, there kind of have to be. ^^;
Okay, I'm making a new paragraph now. And for a very important reason! For now, I will talk about The Black Congress(socalled from here the BC cause I'm lazy). BC is a group of high level demons who oversee all actions that take place in the Neitherworld. By raising your Demon and Character levels, you can petition BC to perform certain things for you, such as increasing the number of items in the shops, raising or lowering the prices(and levels)of items, making the enemies harder or easier, or raising various character stats. You also use BC to transmigrate, which is how your characters change classes. If for some reason your petition is vetoed, you have two choices. Giving up and returning to the castle.. or Persuade by Forcer. IE: kick the living crap out of the people who voted No. It sounds cool, but if you DO manage to beat the 20 or so high level senators who voted against you.. they'll be back. And they'll be pissed. So, in effect, you'll always get a No vote from them.
Oi.. this thing is long. XD I'll end it here. I might come back a bit later and add to it.. or take things out.. I dunno.. anyways, the whole point of this post was to try and convince you to buy this game. So far, its incredible. So, if you're into tRPGs, or want to get into them, try this out. You won't be disappointed.
