After the ground-shattering release of the film that was Mortal Kombat, the sequel, Mortal Kombat: "Annihilation" was made. The results were ground-breaking as well, but in the parody. A combination of low funding, worn-out ideas, too much to include into one film, historical innaccuracies, lack of violence, poor acting, re-used footage, and a broken story made Mortal Kombat: Annihilation one of the largest, if not the largest, embarassments in the history of Mortal Kombat. Both films were the production work of one Lawrence Kasanoff of New Line Cinema. The United Kingdom's own Paul Anderson of the first film apparently forsaw the disaster that Kasanoff and Leonetti, the second films' producer and director, would cause, and bailed before he was the one to absorb the inferno of failure. Another reason for Anderson's disappearance is that he is occupied producing 20th Century Fox's Aliens vs. Predator film. Now, in 2004, the subtle and muddled idea of yet another sequel arises. The film was, early on, dubbed "Mortal Kombat: Domination", because of a totally unofficial idea of a random person, which quickly proliferated to become "fact". The film can factually be called "Mortal Kombat 3" at this point, but a true title is expected. The film is not even 100% confirmed to be produced, but logic would deem it inevitable for a legacy to be extended further even if the film is poor once again. It has been both denied and confirmed to be in progress, but has been confirmed to be in the writing and revising phases of the script by Ain't it Cool News employee Drew McWeeny. We do know that most likely Lawrence Kasanoff is once again at its helm, and from some sources it has already been confirmed, but it is not concretely factual. We also know, or are largely certain of the notion that the movie will be based upon Deadly Alliance, thus glossing over large issues of Mortal Kombat 4, or that they will integrate both MK4 and MK: DA into one film, as they did with MKII and MK3 (and some MK4, specifically Shinnok) in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. As it will be based upon Deadly Alliance's timeframe, or so we assume logically, Liu Kang, Earth's "final" hope, will die as he did in the game. We can also expect to see the Dragon King and a limited form of the dragon army, as that material is quite crucial to the developing and progressing story, and story accuracy. We are also recently aware of the fact that Mortal Kombat film distributor New Line Cinemas is no longer in legal contractual partnership with Midway for the rights to the film. It is possible that New Line will retain these rights, or another, independant even, company may acquire the rights and power the film as the catalyst. It is also possible that Liu Kang will make a surprise return after his logical death, as to appease the majority of Kang-seeking fans who seek indifference. In the additional fact that it is unlikely that there is to be a fourth Mortal Kombat film (at least in at the theatrical level), it is unlikely that Mortal Kombat 3 will end with a surprise, such as the transfer of the soul of Liu Kang to Kano to follow to the next film.
