Half-Life review
No I didn't use copy and paste here. :P That's right, I wrote this review all by myself. :D I've put this on TheGenie.net so I thought I'd put it on here as well...
Well, what can I say about this game? To start off, let me clarify what game you're actually reading about here. You are reading about Half-Life. This game was released in 2001 and was voted 'Best Game Of All Time' by PC Gamer. If you look on the front cover of the box, it will display this award it was given, so you immediately know that the game you are looking at is good. Very good. Very very good. And so on.
Well, here is a brief summary of the game. You play as Gordon Freeman, a scientist in the Black Mesa hidden research complex in New Mexico. You can tell that this complex was inspired by the rumours of Area 51 as the complex is right in the middle of nowhere...It's in a desert. Anyway, it's Gordon's first day at Black Mesa and he's running a little late. The game has an interesting beginning as it gives you a brief time to explore some the areas of the Black Mesa complex before it all goes wrong...So, you're running late, you get off the transit train you are riding and go to reception to sign in. Everything is fine so far. So you go to the locker area where the biohazard suits are kept. You put one on, and then proceed to the test area. Everything seems normal. Nothing wrong at all. It's just standard procedure your fellow scientists tell you. You're a professional. Nothing will go wrong...Think again. Suddenly, you enter the test chamber. You climb up a ladder, press a button and you see this weird crystal thingy appear on a cart. Your collegues tell you to push the cart into the big glowing laser right in the middle of the test chamber. You push it in and then....Chaos ensues. Pandemonium stares you in the face. When you push the cart in, explosions appear all around you. It's all gone wrong, you realise. Then, consiousness begins to slip away from you...
So, a dramatic beginning to the story as you can see. So, when you wake up, you see that the freak accident has obliterated the reacerch station and most of the personnel employed at Black Mesa. Of course there are survivors. A handful of scientists and security guards manage to survive the accident. What you, and the other employees, do not realise is that the accident has had more effect on Black Mesa than they think. The accident has caused absolutly tons of aliens to appear. The test chamber some how opened numerous portals throughout Black Mesa. These portals allow the aliens to teleport from their world, to Black Mesa. So now, it's up to you to adapt to your new environment, and survive. As you go through the game, the story will progress. Of course, I'm not going to tell you how it progresses. Oh no, that would be spoiling it.
So what else can I say about this game? It has a fantastic beginning and the storyline is just gripping. The game totally sucks you in. The game has a good lifespan as well. Just when you think it's finished, the story twists and you continue on your desperate attempt to survive. This game has no soundtrack but the sounds of gunshots, the screams of the personnel trying their best to fight off the aliens, the sounds of explosions...Everything is so lifelike...
The graphics are reasonable, but not the best graphics I have ever seen. However, this game is 3 years old, so the game has an excuse. Like I said, the game sucks you in. This game is one of the best FPS games I have ever played and I am certain it will be for many years to come.
