Level select cheat

Hello. I just wanted to know if there is a level select cheat for Sonic The Hedgehog 1. Not the second Sonic game. Because when i'm playing it and then shut it off for later, it doesn't save. It just goes all the way back to the begining of the game. And this is really annoying! I looked up some cheat sites for this game and it said, "To access the level select cheat hold down button 1 at the start game screen until you hear a sound to confirm correct code entry." But I didn't hear a sound at all. After that it said to press START to select a level. And this didn't work at all! I don't know why. Oh well. Also on the start game screen Sonic moves his finger back and forth for a short amount of time. Maybe it has something to do with that. You think so? I'm just guessing. But anyways, please respond and write back to me when you get a chance. Thanks a lot!

if i remember correctly at the title screen, hold A then press Up, Down, Left, Right. When you hear the chime, press Start. i used it all the time at one point

up down left right when you hear the ring hold a and push start. it works. i do it all the time. this is for the genesis version.
