Xbox 360 will be backwards compatible
An online questionnaire currently being undertaken by Microsoft of Xbox Live users seems to be confirming what we had been hoping for/expecting/were going to cry if we didn't get: cross generational gaming. Microsoft say, and we quote, "Xbox Live is an online gaming service that works across both the current Xbox system and the future Xbox 2.
You will be able to play online and compete against others across both consoles. If you are playing an Xbox game on Live you will be able to compete against people playing that same game on Xbox 2." Which essentially states that the Xbox 360 will be backwards compatible, so that the current generation of Xbox games can be played on it, and the Xbox Live system will accomodate both Xbox and 360 owners at the same time. Bill Gates has also confirmed that the 360 is definitely to be released this year. Unfortunately Mr. Gates was not specific about a date, simply stating, in answer to a question asked about high definition displays and when the "year of high definition" will be, "this year, because we're going to ship this next Xbox." Though not completely forthcoming about the specifics of the actual date, Billy did speak more about the 360 and its multimedia abilities, comparing the menu you see and use on it to a PC operating system and explaining that you will be able to use your Xbox 360 for viewing photos, listening to music and watching TV. We're now looking forward even more to this week's official unveiling of the 360 on MTV at 8:00pm on friday (UK) and Thursday (US) ^ 8 or 9pm? Your guess is as good as mine....
