The prototype of the PlayStation 3 was unveiled at E3 by Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi, who also confirmed that the console is due for release in Spring 2006.

At the core of the console is the brand new Cell processor, which was jointly developed by Sony Group, IBM and Toshiba Corporation, and runs at an amazing 3.2 Ghz.

Performance-wise, the system sports 2.18 Teraflops (teraflops being a measurement of how many floating point operations are processed per second). This means that the in-game movement of objects and characters will be more realistic plus environments, landscapes and virtual worlds will be rendered in real-time.

The controllers will be wireless, and you can play with up to seven of them using Bluetooth connectivity. So no more multitaps!

The discs are now based on Blu-Ray standard, as opposed to the current dual-layer DVD discs, and can store up to 54Gb.

The console will also have in-built networking via a Gigabit Ethernet port, Internet browsing functions, EyeToy-style video chat, photo browsing and archiving, two HDMI ports and plenty more.

It'll increase when you're on the i-net too. But i'm really getting the PS3..no matter what! Even if it means pre ordering or reserving...i'm getting it! Just trade in my PS2 and it's controller (that I have to get a new one of)

Not going to be worth trading in your PS2 at all... best I could give somone in the UK for a PS2 is around £30 - £40... and that aint a lot at all then the best I could actualy sell it for is £50.... GameCube's are worse! £20 on trade in and £30 to sell it

Over hear GC's cost 70€ and if you bring it back before you leave the shop they give you 30€ for ffs.

PS3 is really looking good though IMO. I'm gonna live in this board soon enough lol
