E3 2007: Sony unveils PSP 'Lite'

Sony this evening put paid to those long-standing rumours about PSP 2, unveiling a slinky, new version of the handheld that will launch worldwide in September.

Revealed during the games giant’s conference at E3, the new PSP model boasts a 4.3 inch wide high resolution LCD screen and is 33 per cent lighter and 19 per cent slimmer than the original PlayStation Portable.

The new unit also features a video-out port, enabling PSP users to experience high quality UMD video, pictures and movies from Memory Stick Duo and games titles on their TVs at home. In addition, the new PSP is now able to temporarily store game data from UMDs, reducing load time during gameplay. Moreover, there is now the ability to charge the unit through the PS3 or a PC via USB cable.

The PSP ‘Lite’ will be available in Piano Pink, Ceramic White and Ice Silver versions, as well as three pearlised colurs under the ‘Blume Series’ of Felicia Blue, Lavender Purple and Rose Pink.

So it's pretty much like the PSP, except it's 19% slimmer? Wow, that's really a big difference... I'd like to know how much it is.

I'd like to know the price but tbh its still not worth it. A games console, even handheld is meant to be about the games and not what it can do multimedia wise. Nintendo have got this right with the DS.

PSP being used alongside a PS3 might be alright. I'd sure like to play some PS1 classics on it but that said, the PS3 could be used to play the games anyway. meh each to there own but all in all a PSP (IMHO) is a waste of money.

So its pretty much like what Nintendo did with the DS...Im not gonna buy one, im perfectly fine with a 19% heavier PSP, like whats the difference? The PSP is already pretty light as it is.

i agree, it sounds like sony is just trying to make more money buy doing silly little changes to a perfectly good games console and saying its so mutch beter and so diferent. its only 19% lighter with some little extra fetures still it would be cool to play psp games on your tv

Is it just me, or is Sony copying Nintendo? First was the tilt motion sensor thing on the controller for PS3 and now PSP lite. Sony is about as screwed as my 23 yr. old cousin.

yeah i agree, well not about the cousin thing,.... and ive just realised, this psp lite thing dosent come in black, well that just sucks!

I've seen side by side images of the new and old PSP and there is a difference in "thickness" but tbh its not a great deal. Another pic I saw was this one from Gamesrader for offical sony images:

A smaller piece of crap. My firneds broke apart two regular psp's during a free period once, random piece of stirofoam in there. I would get the qhite package they are doing to get the Family Guy UMD
