Project Ego's Fable
Gather ‘round, one and all. I have a Fable to tell…
Create your life story from innocence to death Grow from an inexperienced youth Into the most powerful being in the world Choose the path of righteousness Or dedicate your life to evil Muscles expand with each feat of strength And force of Will increases with each work of wit Obesity follows gluttony Skin tans with exposure to sunlight And bleaches bone-white by moonlight Earn scars in battle And lines of experience with age Each person you aid Each flower you crush Each creature you slay Will change this world forever Who will you be? Sounds intriguing doesn’t it? Well good, because that’s what it’s supposed to do! That is the opening for Big Blue Box and Lionhead Studio’s latest upcoming RPG for the Xbox. You hear Lionhead Studios and you think: Black and White! I had almost infinite power in that! Ooh evil is soooo cool! That’s right folks! Lionhead Studios founder (and genius) Peter Molyneux is the man behind the masterpiece along with BBB’s brother duo Dene and Simon Carter. Now how might this work have been dreamed up? You wonder. Well, it started along time ago when Dene and Simon were little boys. They dreamt up “a crazy idea for the perfect game” and well, it sort of stuck. It came up again when the Carter bros. were working on Dungeon Keeper in the back of Mr. Molyneux’s house. They began establishing the basic ideas and concepts behind this huge Role-playing game, and a couple years later, their dream became a reality. Project Ego (or what is now known as Fable), is taking leaps and bounds in the gaming world, using real-time AI, and singly rendering most everything! Birds soar over-head, not taking any sort of pattern on. Every step you make changes the world! You could step on a piece of grass, or on a sapling, preventing that sapling from growing into a tree later on. Now if that doesn’t amaze you then well, I say SCREW YOU! The game begins when you’re 15 and ends approximately 70 years of age. You start out as a young boy who went to the village, but came back only to find no mom and dad…. And his best buddy, his dog, dead. From there on… TOTAL FREEDOM BABY!!!! Well, not exactly total freedom, because you won’t be able to start doing the chicken dance while wearing boxers. You can pick up just about anything (providing you have the strength) and go anywhere! You can slash away at the local chickens, flirt with the ladies, and steal candy from a baby. Basically you choose to be good, or evil, or anywhere in between that you want. You can cross-dress, dress in a bear-suit, and even run around in underwear. O_O Be warned however, because there are consequences to being evil. If you decide to go slaughter some dude cuz you just didn’t like his hair-style, the townsfolk will get angry. Yes, just like a said before, the townsfolk can react to something you do. Heck every single character reacts to your appearance, actions, and speech! If you choose to be the hero, you’ll notice people singing about you, talking about you, and even dressing like you! On the other side, if you’re evil, they’ll be aware of you. If you’ve killed someone at their town you may as well forget going there unless you wanna spend some time in the slammer (hehe). Same goes with appearances as well as actions. If you look vile, children will be scared of you. If you dress normally, then people will trust you a little more! BBB and Lionhead have been toying with the idea of having people give you a title by which they call you, depending on your appearance and actions. For instance, “Lose and eye and people may call you ‘One Eye.’ Be good with the ladies and perhaps they will call you ‘The Charmer.’ Or, kill lots of defenseless chickens and you may be embarrassed by you title of “Chicken Slayer.’” (Quoted from page 41 of issue 117 of Game Informer) You can even have drinks named after you! The character development is quite different from every other RPG out there. Instead of using the usual “gaining enough points/things to level up” approach, Project Ego takes it to interesting and deep depths. Your character’s body actually changes with the moves you make and the places you go. If you get cut, and you don’t heal the wound, a scar will eventually be the result. Wanna be pale? Creep out in the nighttime. If you want to be tan and wrinkled, spend lot’s of time outdoors during the day. The abilities and appearances such as hair are affected also. Wielding the sword or axe will make you Mr. Big ‘N Buff whereas taking on the bow will keep you stealthy and light on your feet. Even using their system of magic, called Fae (formerly called Will) carried it’s own consequences. What’s the consequence? Well as you use Fae more, you hairline start receding. Also, if you’ve been using a sword and you pick up a bow, you won’t be able to hit a pillow’s side two feet away. And if you decide to be Mr. Bald, then well, forget trying to use a sword (you lazy bum). Character customization is rumored to be well, almost limitless. In the beginning, I’ve heard you choose you child’s hair color, eye color, ‘n such. Later on you’ll be able to buy different outfits, kill people for clothing, and steal clothing! You get tattoo designs as you play, and if you want, the local barber can fix you up with your very own unique hair-do. Now, the issue of eating has definitely never been in an RPG before. In Fable, you’ll have to maintain a diet or you’ll die. You must eat healthy and you’ll be healthy. If you eat lot’s, you get fat! Now the environments, shall I even say? YEAH! Each stalk of wheat and blade of grass is individually rendered, making it possible to move each one differently. When you character walks through tall grass, each blade will go the direction it would in real-life, parting and curving separately. Each leaf is visible in trees and rocks are full of cracks. The sky is real, and the weather changes. Each season and year brings new things and new nook and crannies. Monster’s and animals roam the lands and bandits and merchants travel the roads. You’ll even meet other hero’s during you’re journeys! Oh, and that’s another factor I forgot to mention. Not only are you going to be on a quest, but other AI driven characters wanting to achieve heroism and good deeds will be out there! I could go on and on about this gaming masterpiece, but unfortunately I don’t have enough info! ^_^ To sum it all up, Blue Box and Lionhead’s Project Ego will be the thing to get! The Carter brothers and Mr. Molynuex are truly geniuses of a different kind, bringing us a real-life fantasy RPG. With stunning graphics, different consequences to every step, monters, AI driven characters, and (OH! Did I mention this?) the element of wooing a maiden and starting a family, Fable will be one of the best games ever. So I say, if you have an Xbox, get Fable! If you don’t, get an Xbox and Fable! No matter if you’re good or evil, an RPG lover or hater, this is the game to get! And so the story ends….
